J ulio R. Alvarez Ortega

Julio Alvarez is a Partner in the Labor, Employment, and Social Security Practice at Creel, García-Cuéllar, Aiza y Enríquez in the Mexico City office.

Julio focuses his practice on labor and employment law, advising on all legal aspects of employment relationships in Mexico and handling both advisory and contentious matters. He is particularly experienced in advising global employers on employment laws, compensation, and employee benefits issues, as well as acting on domestic and cross-border transactions.

He provides guidance to companies establishing operations in Mexico, including the actions required to hire employees, structure compensation, incentive, retention, and benefits schemes, and develop work-related policies. He also advises on the legal implications of subcontracting of personnel through third parties. Additionally, Julio assists clients with the day-to-day management of employment relations, including the preparation of employment documents, planning and implementation of labor reorganizations, workforce reductions, and union matters, modifications to employment terms, employee transfers, terminations, legal audits and labor claims. Moreover, he advises on the labor aspects of corporate transactions —such as mergers and acquisitions, public offerings, bankruptcy reorganizations and carve-out transactions—, as well as on executive compensation matters, including equity and other compensation programs.

Mr. Alvarez is consistently recognized as one of Mexico’s leading lawyers in labor matters by major legal directories, including Chambers and Partners and The Legal 500.

Julio  earned his Law degree (JD) with honors from the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) and his Master’s degree in Labor and Employment Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He has also completed postgraduate studies in labor and employment at institutions such as Georgetown University, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and the Ilustre y Nacional Colegio De Abogados De Mexico. Additionally, he has taught at the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) and is a member of the Barra Mexicana, Colegio de Abogados.
