Carlos del Río S. is a partner in the Mexico City office and leads the Firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility and Pro Bono Program. His practice focuses on Mergers and Acquisitions, Private Equity and Real Estate.
Mr. del Río regularly advises large multinationals and private equity investors and sponsors on acquisitions, investments, joint ventures and divestitures in Mexico across multiple industries and sectors, including Berry Plastics Corporation, Regal Beloit Corporation, Data Device Coproration and Organización Sanitas Internacional. As a partner of the firm’s real estate groups, Mr. del Rio has and continues representing pension funds, private equity funds and other investors in their real estate investments; including acquisitions, strategic joint ventures, development and management of their assets in Mexico. Most recently, Mr. del Rio advised Terrafina in the acquisition of a 10 industrial property portfolio in Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi and Nuevo Leon and PGIM Real Estate in the sale of its multifamily portfolio of properties in Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico. In the realm of private equity and family offices, Mr. del Río advises SK Capital Partners and its portfolio companies in their acquisitions in Mexico, adviced Southern Cross Group in the sale of Cabinet Holding, Ltd (Morepharma), an independent pharmaceutical company in Mexico, and, most recently, Orquest Alimentos in its acquisition of an equity interest in Grupo Filoa.
Carlos has been ranked or cited for his work in corporate, mergers and acquisitions, real estate and pro bono by many publications, including: Chambers Latin America: Latin America´s Leading Lawyers for Business from 2015 through 2016, The Legal 500 from 2014 through 2016, IFLR 1000 from 2010 through 2016 and Latin Lawyer 250: Latin America´s Leading Business Law Firms from 2014 through 2016.
Mr. del Rio is a member of the Barra Mexicana de Abogados and the International Bar Association (Member of the Pro bono Committee). He has been a regular speaker on mergers and acquisitions, private equity and real estate and is a frequent contributor and co-author of articles in different specialized publications in matters related to his core practice areas and to Pro Bono and Corporate Social Responsibility.
Carlos heads our Corporate Social Responsibility and Pro Bono program and is involved in participating as an organizer or speaker at public interest conferences in Mexico and abroad to promote and facilitate pro bono work in Mexico. He is an active member of the Board of Directors of Fundación Appleseed Mexico, A.C., the Red ProBono México and is member of the Centro Mexicano Pro Bono.
Mr. del Rio worked as Foreign Associate in the New York office of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in 2001 and 2002 and the Latin American Desk in the Madrid office of Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira, S.L.P. in 2003 through 2005.
Mr. del Río was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He received his law degree (JD) from Universidad Anahuac in Mexico City in 1998, and obtained his LL.M degree from Northwestern University School of Law together with a Certificate in Business Administration from J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 2001. He is fluent in Spanish and English.
